iOptron SmartStar-E-R80 8502B Computerized 80mm achromatic refractor telescope

Product Description:
The iOptron SmartStar-E-R80 8502B Computerized 80mm achromatic refractor telescope with 400mm focal length is designed for viewing bright stars, planets and moons, as well as wildlife and other land objects during the day. Two eye pieces (K10 and K20) come standard to allow for flexibility in viewing either a wider field or a single focused object. This telescope comes with a patented Alt-Azimuth Mount, which the company affectionately calls: The Cube.   The compact mount design is very functional and flexible. Both axis motors are conveniently built into a small single unit which is universally compatible with all telescopes using a dove-tail connection. The drive motor has a 5-speed setting for precise tracking.  The mount comes standard with an AC connection. The GoToNova hand Controller has 21 characters with back-lit LED buttons. Menu categories on the hand controller are well organized making it easy to use. It has a large LCD screen with 4 lines and the database provides over 5,000 objects.  There are also no dead spots when pointing your telescope anywhere above the horizon.  Sky and Telescope Magazine rated this a 4-star in 2008.  You may order the tube in four brilliant colors:  Astro Blue as pictured here, Terra Green, Pulsar Purple or Cosmic Orange.  Note that this model has stopped including the 5×24 finderscope for locating objects, but there is still a slot for this inexpensive addition.

Celestron SkyMaster Giant 15×70 Binoculars

Celestron SkyMaster Giant 15×70 Binoculars

Product Description:
Although binoculars come in a variety of sizes and prices, the Celestron SkyMaster Giant 15×70 Binoculars with Tripod Adapter is one of the leaders for low-priced giant binoculars. These binos include multicoated optics and BaK-4 internal prisms which promise bright images.  Even though images may seem a little soft across the outer 25% of the field of view, the overall view is still very impressive for such a bargin price.  The distance you hold your eyes away from the eyepiece to see the full field of view is stated to be 18 mm, which is a good distance for higher powered binoculars especially taking into consideration those who must wear glasses when viewing.  For those on a limited budget, these binoculars are an excellent value for astronomical viewing or terrestrial watching.  Binoculars come with a soft carrying case.

Average Customer Review is 4.3 out of 5 stars.  See all 910+ customer reviews here.  Below are what some buyers have said about this particular pair of binoculars:

5 Star – “For the casual observer binoculars are the superior choice. They are everything that a telescope is not…relatively cheap, light, easy use. And because they are so easy to use, you will end up using them much more often than you would a cumbersome telescope.”

4 Star – “Unless you are very, very steady, you will need a tripod or these wonderful binos may end up being a burden. You may be able to hold steady for awhile, but to really enjoy them for any amount of time, go ahead and get a tripod if you don’t have one.”

3 Star – “The optics are truly amazing for the price. The field is wide, the image is bright, razor sharp and with fine contrast and color rendition. My complaint is with the center focusing mechanism which tends to drift and requires constant attention.”

Celestron NexStar 130 SLT Computerized Telescope

Celestron NexStar 130 SLT Computerized Telescope

Product Description:
The Celestron NexStar 130 SLT Computerized Telescope offers reasonable “Go-To” tracking technology to this compact, light weight and portable Newtonian reflector telescope. By using mirrors instead of lenses, the Newtonian optics produces an image almost 5 times brighter than a comparable refractor telescope. However, although reflector telescopes gather more light, the mirrors may need to be collimated or aligned occasionally.  You can easily tune the optical alignment using Celestron’s Collimation Eyepiece.  This telescope needs no tools for setup and comes with two eyepieces: 9mm which offers 72x magnification, and a 25mm which magnifies images about 26 times.  It also includes a student version of “The Sky” planetarium software. Using Celestron’s patented SkyAlign technology, all you have to do is enter the date and time and then point the telescope.  You will be able to find over 4,000 stars, planets and galaxies with a push of a button. The disadvantage with this or any computerized telescope is the battery consumption.  Batteries are not included with this telescope, so when purchasing you may want to consider the optional PowerTank battery.

Average Customer Review is 3.9 out of 5 stars.  See all 55+ customer reviews here.  Below are what some buyers have said about this particular telescope:

5 Star – “I am extremely happy. For the price, it’s a great scope and the goto software was pretty easy to get the hang of. Buy the AC power cord, otherwise you’ll need new batteries every night. You’ll need to reset the date/time on the goto computer every night. It takes a few tries to get proficient with the three star align. This scope isn’t weighted and is very light. This causes it to shake a LOT when you touch it (i.e. when you’re focusing). It takes a few seconds for it to stabilize after any adjustment.”

4 Star – “I have revisited my review and dropped 1 star after owning this scope for 2 years now. The 1 star drop to 4 stars is due to the azimuth [horizontal] motor acting erratically now. It will slow down as if it is binding somewhere, then speed way up for periods.”

3 Star – “If I could do it all over again, I’d avoid this scope, save up more money and get something larger and not a Reflector style.”
